Ethel Dixon, an Alexandria, Louisiana artist, was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, raised and educated in Texas where she started her art at an early age.

Ethel studied art at Texas Southern University under the guidance of internationally known artist and professor John Biggers.

Her study of art continued while traveling with her husband to Europe and throughout the United States. Ethel developed her own technique of painting and began teaching this technique that is simple and effective.

Ethel’s paintings (watercolors and oils) generate warmth within each viewer.

Ethel travels extensively throughout the Southern United states exhibiting her work. She has been commissioned to paint favorite pets, flowers festival posters, family homes and much more!

Since moving to Alexandria in 1979, many organizations have invited Ethel to speak and display her work.  Moreover, her work has been exhibited in galleries and shops throughout the United States.

Ethel has been awarded many honors that include Outstanding Achievement in the Humanities and The Celebration of Black Women from the YWCA-YW Teens, as well as being nominated for the Heritage Fellowship Award.

She has also won numerous first place awards in art shows, including several from the Melrose Plantation Art Show.

As an energetic individual with many talents, Ethel has found time
between painting and running an art gallery, to author a cookbook—
Big Mama’s Old Black Pot and co-authored Dat Little Black Pot
and Colorful Louisiana Cuisine.

Moreover, she uses her unique teaching methods to
teach over 100 children and adults in her studio every week.

She continues to influence and encourage her students to explore their own
painting style, using many art mediums.
